Pennsylvania Food Recall AttorneysLet’s go over some recent Pennsylvania Food Recall cases. In the spring of 2004, the inspection service of the US Department of Agriculture warned consumers against eating potentially Listeria-contaminated bologna from a local PA firm in Bangor. Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious stomach illness and other maladies. Listeria poisoning can also lead to a disease known as listeriosis, which can be fatal in some patients. The company, Charles T. Heard & Co, discovered the problem and voluntarily recalled the potentially tainted products. Thanks to the company’s fast action, no one got sick or suffered any side effects from the tainted bologna. More recently, a firm in Westchester -- the Hain Celestial Group -- responded to growing national fears about salmonella tainted peanuts by recalling nearly a million pounds of frozen dinner entrees out of an abundance of care. Salmonella is another type of bacteria that can cause mild to serious illness in people. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning can include fever, diarrhea, urinary problems and heart problems. Food recalls in Pennsylvania occur in the world of pet food as well. In October of 2008, for instance, in Allentown, a company that produces cat food, recalled a batch of “Special Kitty” kibbles after a batch tested positive for salmonella. This blend of recalled pet food was sold throughout the Atlantic and New England regions. Note: Just because a specific brand of dog food, cat food, or human food has been recalled, doesn’t necessarily mean that the food you’ve already bought is tainted. You need to look at the product’s name, batch, and UPC code. If you have questions, call the manufacturer and/or call the USFDA for more information. Since food recalls tend to be serious matters, consumer watchdog groups will often set up 1-800 numbers and info sites on the web to alert consumers of dangers and tell them how to take action to protect themselves and/or get refunds for their products.
