GM Clutch Disintegration Lawyers

As consumers living in a fast paced society, we rely on the auto industry to provide us with safe, dependable vehicles in order to go about our daily lives. In most cases, we have no reason to believe that the car we're driving may be defective and potentially dangerous. However, it was recently discovered that the V6 manual transmission Chevy Camaro may have a serious clutch defect that could pose a safety hazard to drivers of the vehicle. The clutch, which is a primary mechanical component of all manual transmission vehicles, is capable of disintegrating or collapsing in these automobiles that have low miles and no abuse. This suggests that the potential flaw could lie in the design or manufacture of the clutch itself. General Motors is aware of the problem; however, no recall has been issued.

The risks associated with clutch disintegration are very serious. Because the clutch is a mechanical component that a manual transmission vehicle needs in order to drive properly, if the clutch disintegrates while the vehicle is in motion, the driver of the vehicle may sustain serious injury or worse.

The transmission in a vehicle receives the torque transfer from the internal combustion engine, which is regulated by the clutch. Additionally, the clutch has two rotating shafts allowing the driven mechanism to connect to the driving mechanism, which also regulates when the driver may switch gears. If the clutch is engaged, the driver may change gears since no torque is being transferred. If the clutch is disengaged, the engine's torque is transferred to the wheels and the driver should not switch gears. However, if a vehicle is in motion, especially at high speeds as would be on a freeway, and the clutch disintegrates, the power steering could fail causing the driver to lose control and crash into another vehicle, the center divider or other objects on the road.

High-speed automobile accidents rarely ever leave a driver, or passenger for that matter, unscathed. Injuries that could result from an accident caused by clutch disintegration include, but are not limited to:

  • Brain damage
  • Broken bones
  • Severed limbs
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Paralysis
  • Internal bleeding
